How to choose products for hair loss & thinning
Most shedding in the UK is either telogen effluvium after stress or illness, or pattern hair loss driven by hormones. Topicals support the scalp and the hairs you still have; they cannot replace medical treatment for pattern loss, so persistent thinning is worth a GP conversation.
What to look for
Caffeine and peptide scalp serums — Modest evidence for supporting the growth phase when used daily.
Rosemary oil (diluted) — One small trial found it comparable to low-dose minoxidil over six months.
Piroctone olamine or ketoconazole shampoo — A calm, non-inflamed scalp sheds less.
Gentle, sulfate-free cleansing — Fragile thinning hair breaks more easily during washing.
What to be wary of
Tight styles and daily high heat — Traction and breakage are often mistaken for loss.
Thickening sprays with heavy polymers only — Cosmetic bulk with no effect on shedding.
Undiluted essential oils on the scalp — A common cause of contact dermatitis, which makes shedding worse.
A simple routine for hair loss & thinning
Wash two to three times a week with a scalp-focused shampoo.
Apply a leave-on scalp serum to a dry or towel-dried scalp, daily.
Condition mid-lengths and ends only, and detangle from the bottom up.
Common questions
How much shedding is normal?
Roughly 50-100 hairs a day. A sudden increase lasting more than three months, or a widening parting, deserves medical assessment.
Do supplements help?
Only if you're deficient — iron and vitamin D are worth testing. Otherwise the evidence is weak.
Selenssa is informational and not medical advice. Persistent or painful skin and scalp problems should be assessed by a GP, pharmacist or dermatologist.
