How to choose products for acne & breakouts

Breakouts come from a combination of excess sebum, blocked pores, bacteria and inflammation, so the products that work target one of those directly. Selenssa favours simple, well-dosed formulas over ten-step systems, and penalises heavy fragrance and drying alcohol that make inflamed skin worse.

What to look for

  • Salicylic acid (BHA) 0.5-2%Oil-soluble, so it clears inside the pore rather than just the surface.
  • Benzoyl peroxide 2.5-5%Reduces acne bacteria; 2.5% works about as well as 10% with far less irritation.
  • Azelaic acid 10-20%Treats spots and post-spot marks together, and is generally pregnancy-safe.
  • Niacinamide 4-10%Calms redness and helps regulate oil without stripping.

What to be wary of

  • Coconut oil and isopropyl myristateFrequently pore-clogging on acne-prone skin.
  • Alcohol-heavy tonersShort-term matte finish, then rebound oil and a damaged barrier.
  • Physical scrubs on active spotsSpreads inflammation and delays healing.

A simple routine for acne & breakouts

  1. Morning: gentle cleanse, lightweight moisturiser, non-greasy SPF.
  2. Evening: cleanse, one active (BHA or benzoyl peroxide), moisturiser.
  3. Change one product at a time and give it six weeks before judging it.

Common questions

Does my moisturiser cause breakouts?
Sometimes. Occlusive oils and rich balms can, but skipping moisturiser entirely usually makes oiliness worse — choose a light gel-cream instead.
When should I see a GP?
If you have painful cystic spots or scarring, prescription treatment is more effective than anything sold over the counter. Selenssa is informational only.
